Umkhosi woMhlanga/Zulu Reed Dance

Nongoma: The Royal Reed Dance

The Zulu Reed Dance is a national ceremony that takes place over eight days, celebrating the chastity of thousands of Zulu maidens and unifying the nation under the monarchy.

Before the Dance (Days 1-5)

  • Arrival and Registration (Day 1): Maidens from across the nation arrive at the Queen Mother’s royal village for registration.
  • The Journey for Reeds (Days 2-4): The girls march to nearby riverbeds to cut tall reeds. This journey, which can be up to 30 kilometers for older girls, is a test of endurance and a communal activity supervised by appointed leaders.
  • Rest and Preparation (Day 5): This day is dedicated to rest, washing, and preparing their traditional attire, which includes beaded necklaces, sashes, and skirts such as the Isigege.

During the Dance (Days 6-7)

  • Presenting the Reeds (Day 6): The maidens, in a grand procession, present their reeds to the Queen Mother, a symbolic act of rebuilding the windbreak around her royal home. This is accompanied by song and dance.
  • The Main Dance (Day 7): The maidens perform traditional dances, such as the Indlamu, in the royal arena before the king, the royal family, and thousands of spectators. This is the main spectacle of the festival.

After the Dance (Day 8)

  • The King’s Gift: The King commands the slaughter of cattle to feast the participants, a gesture of thanks for their participation and respect for tradition. The maidens then take a piece of meat home, concluding the ceremony.

Attire for Reed Dance

The Reed Dance is a vibrant spectacle of color and unity, where thousands of maidens present reeds to the Queen Mother. The attire is designed to celebrate their youth and chastity.

  • Izigege and Izinculuba: These are short, beaded skirts and sashes that allow for freedom of movement during the dance, vibrantly displaying the colors and patterns of the region. Our Reed Dance Collection features authentic designs.
  • Bead Necklaces and Rattling Anklets: Layers of bead necklaces and anklets that make a rattling sound are worn to enhance the rhythm and energy of the performance. Complete your outfit with pieces from our Accessories page.
